COUNTRY HOUSES

In the past, Curaçao had almost 100 small plantations and the centre of each plantation consisted of a country house, occupied by the master and his slaves. A large number of these country houses still exist, many of them have been restored and nowadays serve as gallery, restaurant or museum.

HISTORY
Curaçao has a rich history; the relics have been preserved. Six thousand years ago, the Arawak Indians came to Curaçao as part of the century long trek northward. The Indians, who remained on the island, were called Caiquetos. This is one of the possible ways how the island got its name. Until the early twentieth century, Curaçao lived of trade, agriculture and fishing. In 1914 major oil reserves were discovered in Venezuela. Shell started immediately with an oil refinery on the island. Which made the economy grow. During World War II, the island played an important role in the supply of fuel for the Allied troops.
In 1954 Curaçao obtained political autonomy with the other islands of the Netherlands Antilles.. It was part of the Netherlands Antilles until 2010. Now it is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Curaçao is also known as one of the ABC islands along with Aruba and Bonaire and is part of the Leeward Islands.
